REFURBISHMENT OF BEDDELL HOUSE CARE HOME

After four years of involvement, the £5.2m transformation of Grade II listed care home Beddell House near Durham City is finally complete after a major refurbishment program.

The building, situated within 15 acres of parkland, sits at the heart of a collection of residential care buildings operated by Sherburn House Charity. Beddell House is an early Victorian building originally built as a hospital. The refurbishment, carried out over six phases whilst retaining occupation, included the conversion of outdated bedsits into 60 high quality apartments together with a new Orangery, lounge, bar, salon, cinema room, and restaurant as well as circulation spaces.

The work comprised the complete replacement of all the Mechanical and Electrical Services systems, bringing the building in line with current standards and offering substantial improvements to efficiency for the heating, domestic hot water production and artificial lighting.
