HMP SHOWER REFURBISHMENT M&E DESIGN WORKS

Humphrey M&E Consultants are delighted to be working with Amey plc and JYM Partnership on the refurbishment of shower facilities under the Capital and Decency Funding Programmes at multiple HMP establishments.

A number of the existing shower facilities were found to be of inadequate standard, with many experiencing mould growth and insufficient ventilation. The high level scope was to provide the maximum number of cubicle shower outlets for the given space and to comply with the MOJ Property Directorate Technical Standards.

All specified items were suitable for use within establishments including the use of anti-ligature fittings, fixtures, security rated grilles and louvres.

It was the MOJ intention to strive for sustainable development and introduce energy saving devices in all upgraded related refurbishments. Energy saving devices were therefore actively introduced to the projects as part of the design in all cases, including the likes of heat recovery and occupancy sensing. This included close engagement with the Client project delivery and site maintenance teams.

The projects posed a series of challenges to the design team in respect to the spatial requirements of the new ventilation plant and equipment that were needed to be installed within existing limited services voids and cupboards. Generally, the new ventilation plant and equipment were physically larger and needed more space due to improved performance and compliance requirements.

Associated LED lighting, electrical connections, controls and power wiring were also designed as part of the projects.
