HISTORICAL PROJECTS

St. Cuthbert’s Church Darlington

We are working with Saltaire-based architectural practice Knox McConnell to transform St. Cuthbert’s – a much-loved church in Darlington’s market place in need of transformation to be aesthetically pleasing but also accessible and equipped to offer a wide range of activities and events. This work will be achieved by;

  • Making the church accessible to all.
  • Adding key amenities: WCs, meeting room, display stands and information area.
  • Upgrading the church’s infrastructure — heating, lighting and audiovisual — so the building is fit for contemporary use.
  • Installing a cafe area, enabling us to provide hospitality and reach out to the town centre.
  • Replacing the pews with more comfortable, flexible seating to accommodate different styles of worship, concerts, performances, conferences, civic functions and exhibitions.
  • Relocating the font to the West end.
  • Restoring and overhauling the organ.

Humphrey M&E Consultants looked at suitable new heat emitter systems; removal of the pewes and building up the floor meant underfloor heating could be used for comforable and efficient space heating.

St. Cuthbert’s Church sees a future where there is uplifting worship and exploration of the Christian faith, inspiring music and theatre, welcoming hospitality, high-quality spaces for conferences and meetings, engaging heritage experiences, and community outreach and service.

St Mary’s Church, Hexham

Client : Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle

Humphrey M&E Consultants were engaged as Mechanical and Electrical Consulting Engineers for the design of Mechanical and Electrical services associated with the installation of a new heating system at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Hencotes, Hexham.

The works consisted of stripping out of the existing heating boiler and distribution system that supplies the church and the installation of 2 No. new gas fired heating boilers and associated equipment as well as new heating distribution system. This supplied a mixture of radiators and mechanical fan convectors.

Following the completion of the works the interior of the church was re-decorated with strong bold colours reminiscent of an earlier era.

Re-Ordering and Organ Replacement

The Cathedral Church of St Mary located in Newcastle upon Tyne, built between 1842 and 1844 was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin and is a grade I listed building. The works comprised of the replacement of entire Cathedral floor and the removal of the existing organ in the South Aisle and the installation of a new organ.

Humphrey M&E Consultants were initially involved in reconfiguration and improvement of the M&E services to allow for a new bespoke floor to be installed. Further design with the heating and electrical services was carried out for the installation of the new organ and choir gallery.
